Drinking lemon water in the morning, or several times a day, has become a popular trend in the alternative health community. While there’s no doubt that lemons are a nutritious fruit, many of the miraculous claims made for lemon water remain unsubstantiated and some are simply wrong. Here are ten ways that drinking lemon water could actually improve your health.
1. It may help prevent cancer
The tartness and bitterness of lemons are due to high levels of limonoids,
phytonutrients with significant antioxidant properties. Antioxidants can prevent free radicals from damaging cells and the DNA inside of cells, either of which can lead to cancerous growth. One laboratory study investigated the effect limonoids isolated from a lemon had on human breast cancer cells. Eleven of the limonoids tested proved toxic to cancer cells that were estrogen-responsive.
2. It could help you cut down on sugar
A glass of water flavored with half a lemon contains about 8 calories and less than one gram of sugar. Compare that to a can of cola with 140 calories and 39 grams of sugar or a 10 ounce glass of apple juice with 146 calories and 34 grams of sugar. Replacing other soft drinks with lemon water could help you maintain a healthy weight. Reducing your daily consumption of liquid sugars could also help to lower your risk for type 2 diabetes.
