While everyone should exercise caution when taking herbal supplements, this is especially true for those with a history of heart problems. Many popular herbal treatments can interact dangerously with heart medication, or exacerbate preexisting heart conditions. Always consult with your doctor before starting any new herbal remedies or supplements, to make sure they won’t interfere with the prescriptions you take.
1. St. John’s Wort
St. John’s wort is an herbal remedy used for treating depression, anxiety, and certain sleep disorders. It is a yellow-flowered plant which can be taken in a variety of forms, including tea, capsules, and liquid extract.
However, St. John’s wort can interact with a number of medications, reducing the efficacy of many common prescriptions used to treat heart conditions (including statins and beta-blockers). It can also exacerbate the common side effects of these medications, including diarrhea and shortness of breath.
