A sore throat is usually due to a viral or bacterial infection and is often a symptom of the common cold. The soreness typically gets worse over two or three days and then gradually begins to get better. In the meantime, there are several simple home remedies you can use to soothe a sore, irritated throat and help your body to fight off the infection. Here are 10 sore throat remedies for home relief.
1. Salt water
Salt draws moisture out of swollen tissues, relieving pain and inflammation. It also washes out excess mucus and makes the throat environment less hospitable to bacteria. Heat one cup of water until warm, but not hot (about 30 seconds in the microwave). Add ½ teaspoon of salt and stir to dissolve. Take a mouthful and gargle for about 10 seconds. Spit and repeat two more times. Use this remedy up to four times a day as needed.
